On November 3, 2026, Perak Development Corporation and Global Vision Lab jointly announced the launch of the preliminary evaluation of the over 100 MW AI data center project, marking a substantial step forward in the layout of intelligent computing infrastructure in northern Malaysia.

The computing power industry breaks out of the core area of Klang Valley

Perak is located in Selangor, north of Klang Valley. Currently, the core resources of data centers in Malaysia are concentrated in Kuala Lumpur and Sabah Jaya in the central part of the Malay Peninsula, which is the Klang Valley region. Over 70% of the country's large intelligent computing clusters are within this range. With the explosive demand for AI computing power in recent years, the land supply in the core area of Klang Valley has become tight, and the expansion space of power supporting resources has rapidly narrowed. The demand for outsourcing computing power industry continues to rise.

The planned over 100 MW AI data center is the largest digital infrastructure project promoted by Perak State in recent years. Currently, only a confidentiality agreement and a letter of intent have been signed between the two parties, and details such as the overall construction scope, specific site selection, and total investment scale of the project have not been disclosed to the public. According to the division of labor in the agreement, Perak State Development Company is responsible for liaising with various stakeholders within the state, while Global Vision Lab undertakes project development planning and comprehensive evaluations of technology, infrastructure, and commercial dimensions in the early stages.

Northern digital economy opens up new growth space

Dato 'Reza Rafik, CEO of Perak Development Corporation, stated that the project is fully aligned with the development vision of Perak Prosperity 2030 and is expected to promote Perak as a core carrier of high-tech digital infrastructure in northern Malaysia. After the project is implemented, it will directly fill the gap in high-end AI computing power in Perak State, attracting related industries such as AI training, high-performance computing, GPU applications, etc. to extend to the northern region.

Compared to the core area of Klang Valley, Perak State has more abundant land reserves and more stable electricity supply space. Its location can simultaneously radiate the northern market of the Malay Peninsula and the southern region of Thailand, providing a natural advantage in undertaking the demand for external computing power. As the preliminary evaluation work progresses, the construction pace, technical roadmap, and supporting industry plans of the project will be gradually disclosed to the public. The outline of the new intelligent computing hub in northern Malaysia will gradually become clear, injecting new impetus into the balanced development of the national digital economy.Editor/Cheng Liting
