The Italian State Railways (FS) has launched a groundbreaking digital transformation plan, investing 20 billion euros over the next decade to fully deploy the European Railway Traffic Management System (ERTMS). This investment will cover infrastructure managed by the Italian Railway Network Company (RFI), as well as trains and locomotives operated by Trenitalia and FS Logistix under FS.

In the latest announcement by Stefano Antonio Donaluma, CEO and General Manager of FS, an unprecedented technology investment plan has been officially unveiled. The plan will invest up to 20 billion euros over the next decade, with the core goal of fully promoting the European Railway Control System (ERTMS) on infrastructure managed by the Italian Railway Network Company (RFI) and vehicles operated by FS's Trenitalia and FS Logistix.

Donaluma emphasized that "digitalization is one of the fundamental pillars of our strategy, aimed at completely transforming the public transportation system through innovation." This plan sets a clear goal: to achieve 100% full coverage of the ERTMS system on the RFI lines that make up the core expansion network of the European Union Trans European Transport Network (TEN-T).

The specific implementation path is divided into two stages: in the short term, the ERTMS system will be installed on 382 trains operated by Trenitalia and 60 locomotives of the FS Logistix fleet; In terms of long-term planning, FS company has set the goal of equipping all 2000 Trenitalia trains with ERTMS by 2030 and completing the installation of corresponding onboard equipment for 700 locomotives in the FS Logistix fleet by 2033.

Donaluma pointed out that the comprehensive deployment of ERTMS will bring multiple benefits, significantly reducing infrastructure operation and maintenance costs while improving system reliability and significantly improving service quality. Considering the massive scale of the Italian railway system, with approximately 10000 trains running daily and transporting over 2 million passengers, digitization has become a key tool for achieving effective and efficient management. Without the support of artificial intelligence, algorithms, and advanced systems, it is simply impossible to manage such a massive infrastructure today.
