In the desert of Sonora, Mexico, the scorching sun that once symbolized drought is now being converted into clean electricity through photovoltaic panels. The second phase of the Peniasco Port Photovoltaic Power Station project has nearly 90% of its equipment from China, with an installed capacity of 300 megawatts, which can meet the electricity needs of about 200000 households. This sunflower like power station is a microcosm of the deepening green cooperation between China and Mexico.

Green transformation into a new engine for cooperation
2026 is the starting year of China's 15th Five Year Plan, and green transformation is a key direction; The same year also marked the 54th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Mexico. In this context, the bilateral cooperation forum focuses on "Green Transformation and Development: A New Path for High Quality Cooperation between China and Mexico".
Yu Yunquan, Deputy Director of the China Foreign Languages Administration, pointed out that China Mexico cooperation is moving from trade to industrial chain synergy. Mexican Ambassador to China Jesus Schrader stated that China is the world's largest country in terms of installed clean energy capacity, and Mexico plans to source 35% of its electricity from clean energy by 2030, demonstrating strong complementarity between the two sides. This strategic consensus has laid a solid foundation for cooperation.

From photovoltaics to new energy vehicles
The cooperation has yielded fruitful results. After the completion of Phase II of the Penasco Port Photovoltaic Power Station, it will become one of the largest photovoltaic power stations in Latin America. At the same time, Chinese new energy vehicle companies are accelerating their entry into the Mexican market, assisting in the construction of their green transportation system, making Mexico an important new energy vehicle production and sales market in North America.
Chinese Ambassador to Mexico Chen Daojiang stated that China is willing to deepen strategic docking with Mexico and expand cooperation in areas such as green and low-carbon. Wang Xinming, Counsellor of the Latin America Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, pointed out that there is vast space for cooperation between the two sides in the fields of green infrastructure and clean energy. This industrial synergy is transforming ideas into reality.

Provide a new paradigm for the global South
The impact of China Mexico cooperation goes beyond the bilateral scope. Sun Yanfeng, Director of the Institute of Latin American Studies at the China Institute of Modern International Relations, believes that Mexico has resource and location advantages, while China has industrial chains and technological capabilities. Cooperation between the two sides can provide new demonstrations for China's cooperation with the global South.
Enrique Dusel Peters, Director of the Center for Sino Mexican Studies at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, emphasized that strengthening academic exchanges can provide a more solid knowledge foundation for cooperation. From desert power plants to strategic docking, the path of green cooperation between China and Mexico is becoming increasingly clear, not only promoting the development of the two countries, but also contributing to the exploration of sustainable development in the global South.Editor/Yang Meiling
