In May 2026, a multifunctional ship painted in blue and white slowly departed from the dock of Fu'an Shipyard in Ningde, Fujian, and will join the maritime fleet of the Suez Canal Authority.

Giant ship delivery locks in canal services

This comprehensive oil supply and service ship, named Faher-1, was built by Fujian Funing Shipbuilding Heavy Industry. It is 64.8 meters long, 16 meters wide, and has a draft of 5 meters. It is equipped with the DP2 dynamic positioning system and can accurately locate without anchoring. The vessel has professional diving operation capabilities, adopts energy-saving operation technology, significantly improves fuel utilization efficiency, and can meet the long-term stationed operations of 60 crew members. Representatives from Egypt's Temsa Shipbuilding Company and American Bureau of Shipping witnessed the entire sea trial and dock test to ensure that the ship's quality meets international standards.

China Egypt shipbuilding cooperation has lasted for decades

Faher-1 is jointly owned by Egypt's Temsa Shipbuilding Company, Canal Ship Mooring and Lighting Company, and Canal Cable Company. Temsa Shipbuilding Company is a subsidiary of the Suez Canal Authority. Previously, China Shipbuilding Industry Group participated in the upgrading and transformation of Alexandria Shipyard in Egypt, building it into the largest shipbuilding enterprise in Africa. This cooperation continues the long-term relationship of complementary advantages between both parties. Canal Authority fully responds to income pressure

Affected by the situation in the Red Sea, the Suez Canal will suffer a revenue loss of up to 7 billion US dollars in 2024. Egypt is accelerating the renovation of waterways and upgrading of supporting services to promote diversified sources of income. After the commissioning of Faher-1, the number of oil service ships operated by Temsa Shipbuilding Company has increased to four. The Canal Authority will use this opportunity to expand its oil and gas exploration services, optimize its fleet structure, and strengthen its comprehensive offshore service capabilities. The Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, Rabie, stated that advanced technology and equipment will continue to be introduced to promote the transformation of the canal into a more efficient and multifunctional global trade node. From the shipyard in Fujian to the Suez Canal, China's shipbuilding hard power is following this giant ship into a key global shipping channel.Editor/Gao Xue
