From 2025 to 2026, China's railway construction will usher in a new wave of explosive growth. From the Loess Plateau to the forest and snowy plains, from border ports to the western hinterland, six strategic arteries are simultaneously exerting their efforts, not only filling the gap in the road network, but also injecting strong momentum into the high-quality development of the regional economy.

The final puzzle of Qingyin and Baohai Channel

The Tai Sui high-speed railway and the Bao E Yu high-speed railway can be regarded as the final works of the national eight vertical and eight horizontal main channels. As a key section of the Qingyin Corridor, the Taisui High speed Railway has passed the feasibility study review by the end of September 2025. The 239 kilometer long line starts from Taiyuan hub and ends at Suide West Station, with a designed speed of 350 kilometers per hour. This is not only an extension of Shanxi's first 350 kilometer per hour high-speed railway, but also an important supplement to the main axis from Beijing Tianjin Hebei to Chengdu Chongqing.

At the same time, the Baotou Eyu high-speed railway, as the northernmost section of the Baotou (Yinhai) Expressway, has finally ended its only unapproved history. The pre feasibility study of the entire line will pass the review in March 2025, with an estimated investment of 42 billion yuan. After completion, it will completely break through the bottleneck of high-speed railways between Inner Mongolia and Shaanxi.

End blind spot activation of peripheral nerves

In the northeast and northwest, two railways are rewriting the fate of the terminal. The construction of the Changliaotong high-speed railway means that the southeastern part of Jilin will bid farewell to the history of no high-speed railway. This railway, with a total length of about 334 kilometers, connects with the Shenyang Baiyun high-speed railway using existing lines, allowing Liaoyuan, Meihekou and other places to step into the national high-speed railway network and help achieve the goal of connecting cities with high-speed railways.

In Xinjiang, the Urumqi Kuitun third and fourth line railway has passed the feasibility study review in September 2025. As the passenger and freight branch line project of Lanzhou Xinjiang corridor, it will release the transport capacity of the existing lines, not only serve the outbound transport of Xinjiang coal, but also provide infrastructure support for the quality improvement and increment of China Europe regular trains, and support the construction of the core area of the the Belt and Road.

Xingbian Fumin and Old Line Renewal

Railways are not only economic lines, but also national defense and security lines. The restart of the Heihe to Wuyiling railway marks the substantive stage of the construction of border railways in Heilongjiang Province. The total length of the route is nearly 300 kilometers, incorporating border counties and cities such as Xunke County and Jiayin County into the road network, which is of great significance for promoting border prosperity and national defense security.

Equally important to safety is the expansion and renovation of the Baocheng Railway. This large artery connecting the southwest and northwest urgently needs to be renovated due to its long history and frequent diseases. After the pre feasibility study is approved in July 2025, the realignment and double track construction of key sections have been put on the agenda. In the future, it will completely solve the hidden dangers of water disasters during the rainy season and improve the logistics efficiency from northwest to southwest. These six railways either fill gaps, upgrade channels, or ensure safety. With intensive construction around 2026, a denser, more efficient, and smarter Chinese railway network is accelerating to become a reality.Editor/Cheng Liting
