The Kass ø Green Hydrogen Plant in Auburn, Denmark is about to undergo a large-scale expansion of production. French energy giant Engie has reached an agreement with Danish developer European Energy to increase the project's production capacity from the existing 52MW to 150MW by 2030, and has secured long-term sales rights for 20000 tons of green hydrogen annually. This is the latest signal of accelerated integration in the European hydrogen energy market.

Behind the 228 million euro subsidy
The Kass ø project has been officially put into operation in 2025, using three Siemens Energy electrolysis cells to produce hydrogen, which is used as raw material for electronic methanol production. This expansion has received a subsidy of 228 million euros from the German government, funded by the Auction-as-a-Service mechanism of the European Hydrogen Bank, which has allocated a total of 1.3 billion euros to three projects in Denmark.
The other two beneficiaries are Everfuel's Frigg project (€ 244.9 million, 200MW) and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners' H ø st project (€ 777 million). All three projects will be connected to the planned Denmark Germany hydrogen backbone pipeline network, which is listed as a project of common interest by the European Union and aims to be completed before 2030. However, the commissioning time has been postponed from the original 2028 due to increased project complexity and extended approval cycles, according to Energinet, the transmission operator.

Germany's mandatory hydrogen policy
Germany has legislated that by 2040, hydrogen energy must account for 10% of transportation energy consumption, and fuel suppliers who fail to meet the standards will face penalties. This hard indicator means that Germany's demand for imported green hydrogen will continue to rise. Keywords: new energy, green hydrogen projects
Denmark, with its abundant offshore wind power resources, is becoming the most promising green hydrogen exporting country in Europe. The expansion of Kass ø project coincides with a time window of strong supply and demand.Editor/Cheng Liting
