The wind on the ancient Silk Road is now blowing the waves of the Caspian Sea. On the vast land of Azerbaijan, the criss crossing railway network was once a witness to the industrial heritage of the Soviet Union, but now it seems somewhat inadequate in the busy logistics flow of the Eurasian continent due to aging equipment. As a key node connecting the Eurasian continent, Azerbaijan is well aware that if it wants to seize the opportunities brought by the the Belt and Road, it must first revitalize the steel dragon. Recently, a delegation from Azerbaijan Railways Company (ADY) crossed mountains and seas to China and had a deep dialogue with CRRC Ziyang Locomotive Co., Ltd. located in Sichuan regarding the future of national transportation capacity.

Revitalization of Passenger Transport Services

At the meeting table, both sides focused their attention on people's livelihood travel. With the official signing of a procurement agreement involving four mainline passenger locomotives, the blueprint for upgrading Azerbaijan's intercity railway services has become clear. These new locomotives, specially designed to optimize the passenger experience, are expected to be officially delivered in 2027. At that time, trains shuttling between Baku and major cities will no longer be synonymous with slowness and noise, but rather a symbol of comfort and efficiency. This is not only an iteration of locomotive equipment, but also a systematic reshaping of the level of public transportation services in Azerbaijan, allowing the public to truly feel the convenience brought by infrastructure upgrades.

Adding momentum to freight corridors

If passenger transportation is related to people's livelihood, freight transportation is directly related to the economic lifeline of the country. The 7 AC50 advanced freight locomotives agreed upon by both parties last year are currently undergoing their final sprint on the production line and are expected to be officially delivered in September this year. These 'strongmen' will be directly applied to the mainline transportation of international transportation corridors, greatly improving the efficiency of cargo passage. At the same time, both parties have not stopped here. The procurement plan for the next 14 locomotives is currently under intense negotiation, and the relevant technical details have also been finalized simultaneously. This tiered introduction strategy ensures the continuous expansion of Azerbaijan's railway freight capacity and provides solid hardware support for the surge in cross-border trade.keywords:Infrastructure News

Consolidate the hub position again

Azerbaijan is located at the intersection of the North South Corridor and the East West Corridor, and its strategic position is self-evident. However, outdated equipment once hindered its potential as a logistics hub. The large-scale introduction of advanced rail transit technology from China is a crucial step for Azerbaijan to address its shortcomings. Through systematic modernization, the operational safety and traffic capacity of the country's railways will undergo a qualitative leap. This not only effectively alleviates the pressure brought by the current increase in cross-border freight volume, but also strengthens Azerbaijan's competitiveness as an international logistics hub. While deepening the infrastructure and industrial cooperation between China and Azerbaijan, it also opens up broader space for economic and trade exchanges in the entire South Caucasus region.Editor/Yang Meiling
