At an altitude of 4280 meters, the world's first four terminal ultra-high voltage flexible straight project key hub has started construction. Every year, 43 billion kilowatt hours of green power spans 2681 kilometers, and Xizang's clean energy is about to light up the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area at a millisecond speed.

Energy starting point at 4280 meters
On July 9, 2026, the Changdu converter station of the Tibet Guangdong DC project was officially started in Meiyu Township, Zuogong County, Changdu, Xizang. This is the highest flexible DC converter station in the world, with a rated capacity of 8 million kilowatts. As the starting point hub of the project, it mainly gathers new energy from northern regions such as Changdu Basu and sends it out uniformly.
Just a month ago, the Chayu converter station, which belongs to the same project, also broke ground on June 5th. The synchronous advancement of two transmission end converter stations marks the entry of the world's first four terminal ultra-high voltage flexible DC project into the comprehensive construction stage. The whole line has a total length of 2681km, spanning Tibet, Yunnan, Guangxi and Guangdong, and is also the first UHV project across the three geographical steps of the Qinghai Tibet Plateau, the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and South China hills.
A 9-millisecond energy leap
The rated transmission capacity of the Tibet Guangdong DC project is 10 million kilowatts, and it is planned to be fully operational by 2029. After completion, it can deliver over 43 billion kilowatt hours of clean electricity annually to the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area - equivalent to half of the annual power generation of the Three Gorges Dam. It can replace about 12 million tons of standard coal and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 33 million tons.

What's even more amazing is the delivery speed: green electricity from the snowy plateau can reach the Greater Bay Area in just 9 milliseconds. The project delivery end can connect 18.8 million kilowatts of photovoltaic and 3.7 million kilowatts of hydropower, which will greatly alleviate the electricity pressure in the Greater Bay Area. The investment in the construction of the integrated water, wind, and solar power base for the entire project will exceed 150 billion yuan, which can directly create more than 100000 jobs during peak periods. This green electric road spanning 5000 miles of mountains and rivers is reshaping the map of energy cooperation between eastern and western China.Editor/Cheng Liting
