On June 30, 2026, the Nanchong coal-fired power generation project, a key project in Sichuan Province, officially started construction. This is the first million kilowatt ultra supercritical coal-fired unit invested and built by a provincial state-owned enterprise in the southwest region, and also the first large-scale energy project to be implemented during the 15th Five Year Plan period in Sichuan. The project is located in the southern area of Nanchong Economic Development Zone, with a total investment of approximately 8.058 billion yuan. Two million kilowatt high-efficiency coal-fired power units will be built, along with supporting environmental protection facilities throughout the entire process.

The new generation of clean coal-fired power standards has been implemented in Northeast Sichuan

The project strictly follows the latest clean and efficient coal-fired power construction standards in China, and is equipped with flue gas desulfurization and denitrification devices and fully enclosed coal storage yards to reduce pollutant emissions from the source. In the design phase, the two core indicators of atmospheric pollutant emission concentration and coal consumption for power supply were set below the industry benchmark line, completely breaking away from the old path of high emission and high energy consumption of traditional coal-fired power, and achieving clean and efficient utilization of coal resources.

The production nodes of the two units have been clearly defined. Unit 1 is planned to be completed and put into operation in May 2028, and Unit 2 will be officially connected to the grid in August of the same year. The overall construction period is controlled at around two years.

Complete the shortage of supply guarantee in Sichuan power system

The current power structure in Sichuan is highly dependent on hydropower. During the flood season, there is surplus electricity but high pressure to abandon water. During the dry season, hydropower output drops sharply, and the supply-demand gap persists for a long time, requiring a large amount of external electricity to supplement in Sichuan. After these two million kilowatt units are put into operation, the average annual power generation can reach 9 billion kilowatt hours, which can fill the power supply gap during the dry season and significantly reduce the fluctuation risk of the province's power system.

Stable local coal-fired power support can also reduce Sichuan's dependence on external electricity purchases during extreme weather conditions, significantly enhancing the autonomy of regional power supply. Keywords: coal-fired power projects, coal-fired power units

The development of industries in Northeast Sichuan has received stable energy support

In recent years, the Northeast Sichuan region where Nanchong is located has undertaken many high load energy industries transferred from the east. Previously, due to insufficient local stable power sources, the progress of project implementation was often delayed by power shortages. After the completion of this large-scale coal-fired power project, it can directly provide stable basic load power for the industrial park in Northeast Sichuan, without the need for long-distance power allocation across regions, and the comprehensive electricity cost in the region will also decrease accordingly.
