On July 20, 2026, Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with Rodriguez Burkitt, the candidate for the next Secretary General of the United Nations and the Permanent Representative of Guyana to the United Nations, in Beijing.

Rodriguez Burkitt introduced his campaign proposals and vision for the future development of the United Nations, stating that the world is currently undergoing major changes, with challenges such as the spread of conflicts, climate crisis, and lagging development. No matter how the situation changes, multilateralism is not an optional choice for the international community, but a necessary one. China is a staunch supporter of the United Nations and a leader in development issues. I support Resolution 2758 of the United Nations General Assembly, adhere to the One China principle, highly appreciate China's four major global initiatives, and advocate for the establishment of the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization. Opportunities are hidden in crises. I will continue to promote the United Nations to become more flexible and efficient through reform, reflecting fairness and justice, placing sustainable development at the center of the international agenda, and bringing tangible benefits to people of all countries.   

Wang Yi stated that currently, the international system centered around the United Nations is facing challenges, multilateralism is being challenged, and the law of the jungle is emerging. All parties look forward to the next Secretary General leading the United Nations to face difficult challenges and play its due role in the cause of international peace and development. Ms. Rodriguez Burkitt's decision to run for Secretary General reflects her firm belief in multilateralism and unwavering support for the cause of the United Nations.   Multilateralism is a protective weapon for small and medium-sized countries, and the United Nations is an important foundation for the common development of all countries. The United Nations is not perfect, but without it, the world would only be worse.  

Wang Yi emphasized that this year marks the 55th anniversary of the restoration of China's legitimate seat in the United Nations. No matter how the international situation changes, China always adheres to being a builder of world peace, a contributor to global development, and a maintainer of the international order. It always abides by the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter and firmly supports the UN cause.

In May of this year, China took over the rotating presidency of the Security Council and presided over a high-level meeting on "upholding the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter and strengthening the international system with the United Nations at its core". Representatives from over 100 countries attended the meeting, and their unanimous voice was to uphold, revitalize, and strengthen the United Nations. China will participate in the election process of the next Secretary General with a responsible and constructive attitude, support the selection of a Secretary General who abides by the United Nations Charter, has outstanding abilities, is fair and upright, and fulfills his duties in accordance with the provisions of the Charter, promote the revitalization of the authority and vitality of the United Nations, adapt to new situations, and respond to new challenges.Editor/Min Jing
