The waves of the Persian Gulf beat against the steel piles of the drilling platform, and the salty sea breeze carried new expectations. Abu Dhabi's national oil giant bid farewell to the shadow of past production capacity damage and joined forces with multiple energy powers to establish offshore gas fields. When the drilling rig roars again, this city is refining the natural gas underground into the bottom gas that stabilizes the supply system of the bay.

Heavy investment landing gas field project

On July 21, 2026, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, a national oil giant in the United Arab Emirates, announced that it would invest $6.2 billion to promote the development and construction of a local natural gas project. ADNOC has released a statement stating that the final investment plan for the offshore Umshayif gas cap project has been finalized. The project has a diverse cooperation lineup, bringing together multiple international energy companies such as Total Energy of France, Eni Group of Italy, and PetroChina.

The Umshayif gas cap project, which landed this time, includes EPC general contracts for three large-scale offshore infrastructure projects, with a total amount of up to 5.1 billion US dollars. At the same time, ADNOC's drilling subsidiary will undertake drilling tasks for 14 oil and gas wells, with a project amount of 365 million US dollars. The plan is to rely on 3 existing drilling rigs and complete all construction in 18 months.

Assist in energy layout

The natural gas project is expected to be officially put into operation in 2030, with a daily output of over 600 million standard cubic feet of natural gas and simultaneous production of associated condensate oil. The production capacity accounts for about 10% of the current daily natural gas consumption in the UAE, effectively filling the local gas gap.

Sultan Ahmed Jabir, UAE Minister of Industry and CEO of ADNOC Group, stated that the company is fully committed to promoting an integrated natural gas development strategy and fully tapping into the abundant natural gas resources in the local area. The current global natural gas market demand continues to rise, and the implementation of this project will further strengthen the UAE's liquefied natural gas industry system and enhance its international energy supply capacity. Cracking the energy crisis

This large-scale investment has landed during a critical period when Gulf oil producing countries are facing difficulties in increasing production capacity. Previously, due to regional conflicts, the transportation of the global core energy channel, the Strait of Hormuz, was blocked, which had a great impact on regional energy exports. In May 2026, the Habshan plant area, a core natural gas processing base in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, was affected by conflicts and attacked, resulting in severe damage to production capacity. It is expected that normal production will not fully resume until next year. In this context, the implementation and production of new projects will effectively hedge the existing capacity gaps and stabilize the energy supply and export system of the United Arab Emirates.Editor/Gong Ziwei
