There have been four street protests in Abuja and Lagos, Nigeria, with clashes and rallies occurring one after another. Tear gas has disrupted normal order in the cities. This anti-government demonstration and multiple planning points have not yet targeted Chinese entities, but the real risks of commuting obstruction and road closure have become prominent. Chinese enterprises in Nepal urgently need to conduct graded risk assessment.

Assessment of Protest Situation

This protest was initiated by local activist Omoyele Sovere and his recapture movement organization, with demands covering multiple social issues such as security, living costs, minimum wage, and fuel subsidies. The organization's notification covers 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria, with a total of 7 assembly points set up. Currently, the main conflicts are concentrated in Abuja and Lagos, and the remaining points are only in a warning state. The demonstration has not yet escalated into a nationwide shutdown, but it proposes to raise the minimum wage to 500000 naira per month, which is 7.1 times the current standard of 70000 naira. Coupled with the high inflation environment in the local area, it may be transmitted to the employment level of enterprises in the future.

Key points for handling by Chinese enterprises

Whether the situation spreads mainly depends on three major signals: the spread of demonstrations to other locations, the joining of social organizations such as trade unions, and the occurrence of casualties in law enforcement. Any of these events will increase business risks. Chinese enterprises should implement four level disposal according to urban routes, sort out key routes such as project warehouses, ports, airports, etc. Security personnel are only responsible for internal safety of the site, employees should avoid getting involved in on-site disputes, and properly retain various loss certificates. At present, the protests are not specifically targeted at Chinese personnel and projects.
