For a long time, the Bahamas' electricity production has been highly dependent on imported heavy oil and diesel, resulting in high carbon emissions and difficulty in ensuring power supply stability. With the finalization and implementation of Shell's new project, the local energy structure has ushered in an opportunity for transformation, laying a solid foundation for low-carbon and sustainable development.

Project landing layout

Energy giant Shell has completed the final investment decision for the Bahamas liquefied natural gas regasification receiving station and is deeply involved in the upgrading of local energy infrastructure. In this cooperation, Shell acquired 40% of the shares of New Providence Natural Gas Limited and formed a joint venture team with Sun Oil Holdings, a subsidiary of Fockel Holdings. The project is located in the Clifton Wharf area and is fully constructed, owned, and operated by a joint venture. It mainly provides stable gas supply for the New Providence Island power plant, covering the core population areas of the local area.

Empowering Energy Innovation

This project precisely aligns with the development national policy of the Bahamas in the new energy era and is in line with the local reform plan of gradually transforming power generation units. After the project is implemented, clean liquefied natural gas will replace traditional heavy oil and diesel power generation modes, effectively reducing carbon emissions and significantly improving the stability of power grid supply. Shell will rely on its own US gas reserves to ensure stable fuel supply throughout the project, and with mature experience in operating small-scale liquefied natural gas projects, assist in the efficient implementation of the project. This investment is an important breakthrough in the construction of a low-carbon energy system in the Bahamas. It not only optimizes the local single energy supply structure and builds a more risk resistant energy security system, but also further expands Shell's business layout in emerging markets, consolidates its development advantages in the integrated natural gas industry, and achieves mutual benefit and win-win between government and enterprises.Editor/Min Jing
