On the Gobi Desert in Qitai Town, Shangdu County, Ulanqab, the first engineering pile of the 300MW/1200MWh independent new energy storage power station in Hanhai has been laid. As the first model project to start construction among the six major energy storage layouts of Inner Mongolia Power Grid Energy Storage Company this year, this power station has attracted the attention of the entire energy storage industry chain as soon as it started construction. Unlike previous local new energy supporting energy storage projects, it is directly invested and developed by the power grid system platform, breaking away from the traditional path of independent energy storage dominated by social capital at its root.

A brand new solution to the pain points of peak shaving in Shage Wilderness

Ulanqab, as the core carrier area of the domestic Shage Wilderness Scenic Area, has long been plagued by practical problems such as insufficient peak shaving resources, high pressure on new energy consumption, and tight external transmission channels, while continuously producing massive amounts of green electricity. Previously, most of the energy storage projects put into operation locally were bound to mandatory allocation and storage requirements for new energy, with scattered layouts and small capacities, making it difficult to play a core regulatory role in overall network coordination and scheduling.

The Hanhai project is not tied to any wind and solar project development, and adopts the lithium iron phosphate prefabricated cabin technology route. It has made special technical adaptations for the high-altitude conditions in the Gobi Desert. After completion, it will be directly connected to the main grid of the Mengxi power grid, and the core will undertake the functions of peak shaving, smoothing out new energy output fluctuations, and reducing transmission and distribution losses throughout the network. At the same time, it will directly participate in the electricity spot market and auxiliary service market to obtain profits. After the large capacity of 1200MWh is put into operation, it can absorb surplus green electricity generated by wind turbines at night, smoothly release electricity during peak periods, significantly reduce the burden of deep peak shaving on thermal power units, and directly improve the safety and resilience of the high proportion new energy grid in Mengxi.
