In the heart of the Taklamakan Desert, a super power bank without a chimney quietly lights up. The largest high-voltage fed energy power station in China, contracted by China Electric Power Construction Jiangxi Institute, has been fully connected to the grid, providing a solid barrier for the weak electricity network in southern Xinjiang with millisecond level response and setting a technical benchmark for the construction of the Shagehuang Energy Base.

Recently, the 200000 kW/800000 kWh independent new energy storage project in Minfeng County, Xinjiang, undertaken by China Power Construction Jiangxi Institute as the EPC general contractor, was successfully connected to the grid in one go. This power station is the largest high-voltage cascaded independent energy storage project in China that has been put into operation. It is also a key demonstration project for high-voltage cascaded energy storage in southern Xinjiang, providing important reference for the large-scale construction of high-voltage cascaded energy storage in the Gobi environment.

Project Overview

The project is located in Minfeng County, Hotan, Xinjiang, covering a total area of 112.6 acres. It is equipped with a 35 kV grid type cascaded high-voltage direct hanging energy storage system independently developed by Zhiguang Energy Storage. The project adopts the H-bridge power unit series connection direct hanging 35 kV high-voltage level energy saving technology, eliminating the need for traditional step-up transformers, and improving the system cycle efficiency by 5 percentage points compared to the low-voltage solution. The high-voltage cascade architecture has outstanding reactive power and voltage regulation capabilities. Relying on fiber optic signal control, the overall response time is less than 5 milliseconds, which can adapt to the weak current network conditions in southern Xinjiang and provide reliable network support for the power grid.

Desert Campaign

Located in the hinterland of the Taklamakan Desert, the project site has strong sandstorms, scarce precipitation, and significant temperature differences between day and night. The construction team implements refined measures such as meteorological warning, grid management, wind and sand protection, and water pipe control, implements staggered construction and special emergency plans, and strictly controls the quality and safety of the project. The project team efficiently completed key tasks such as off grid testing, system integration, and scheduling docking, achieving full capacity and on-time grid connection, and the large-scale energy storage power station in the desert was officially put into operation.

Empowering the power grid

After the project is put into operation, a single full cycle charge and discharge can reduce coal consumption by up to 240 tons, and can output approximately 280 million kilowatt hours of clean electricity annually. The project can enhance the peak shaving level of the regional power grid, reduce the abandonment of new energy, strengthen the power supply guarantee capability of Xinjiang's power grid, drive the development of upstream and downstream industries, and promote local energy transformation and high-quality economic development. Keywords: grid type energy storage, desert, new energy

The development of new energy in southern Xinjiang has always been constrained by weak power grid foundation and insufficient consumption capacity. This project not only sets a new record for the installation capacity of China's domestically structured high-voltage Federal Reserve, but also verifies the practical application value of this technology in extreme environments. The high-voltage cascade technology has the dual advantages of cost reduction and efficiency improvement, as well as power grid support. This model of desert engineering will provide valuable technology and practical experience for the construction of the Shage Desert Energy Base in China.Editor/Gong Ziwei
