The sea breeze in Honghai Bay, Shanwei, carries the sound of electricity from photovoltaic panels and extends southwest along the planned 300 kilometer flexible straight line, ultimately reaching the urban load center of Shenzhen. At the feasibility study site of the Guangdong East Clean Energy Transmission Shenzhen Multi terminal Flexible DC Transmission and Transformation Project, technicians are checking the route of each section. The landing pace of this national key project during the 15th Five Year Plan period is continuously accelerating in the wave of green power transformation in the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area.
In the first half of 2026, the cross regional green power transmission volume in the Greater Bay Area increased by 42% year-on-year, and the construction of new power grids in mega cities is ushering in a key technological breakthrough node.

300 kilometer channel realizes green electricity sharing between Guangdong and Hong Kong
This national key project, scheduled to start construction in 2029, starts in Shanwei, Guangdong and ends in Shenzhen. The total length of the line exceeds 300 kilometers and the transmission capacity is 8 million kilowatts. After completion, it can deliver about 8 billion kilowatt hours of clean electricity to Shenzhen and about 4 billion kilowatt hours of clean electricity to Hong Kong annually, which is equivalent to directly reducing carbon dioxide emissions by more than 6 million tons per year, further optimizing the power structure of the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area, and significantly increasing the proportion of regional green electricity consumption.
Advance layout of talent reserves for technological breakthroughs
The project adopts the domestically pioneered multi terminal flexible DC direct connection technology route to the 220 kV urban power grid, which can provide flexible mutual aid channels and black start power for the 500 kV grid structure in Shenzhen, thoroughly consolidating the guaranteed power grid of mega cities.

In response to technical challenges such as multi site collaborative control and rapid disposal of DC faults, Shenzhen Power Supply Bureau has made advance arrangements from the dimensions of technical research, talent cultivation, and training reserves. It has collaborated with top domestic experts in the field of flexible DC to conduct special training, fill in the gaps in the entire chain of capabilities, and clear the early obstacles for the implementation of the project. Keywords: New type of power grid construction, kilovolt power grid
In the future, more and more electricity will come directly from the sea breeze and photovoltaic panels in office buildings, data centers, and residential homes in Shenzhen. This cross city flexible and straight channel is steadily delivering green energy from eastern Guangdong to every electricity consumption scenario in the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area.Editor/Cheng Liting
