The wind along the Yangtze River bank swept over the construction fence of Wanzhou Power Plant, and the first tank of concrete fell steadily into the foundation pit of the main plant along the conveying pipeline. The first solid foundation of the largest high-efficiency coal-fired power project in Southwest China was poured on the land in the Three Gorges Reservoir area.

On August 30, 2026, the 2 × 1000 MW expansion project of Guoneng Chongqing Wanzhou Power Plant Phase II, jointly constructed by China Energy Engineering Construction Group and Jiangsu Electric Power Construction Third Company, officially started pouring operations. This high-efficiency coal-fired power project aimed at the largest thermal power plant in Southwest China has entered the stage of comprehensive construction.

Significant optimization of coal consumption indicators

The project uses high-efficiency ultra supercritical single reheat generator units, with a designed coal consumption as low as 267.59 grams per kilowatt hour for power supply. Compared with the average coal consumption of 285 grams per kilowatt hour for current million kilowatt units in China, the coal consumption per unit of power generation is directly reduced by 18 grams. Based on an average annual power generation of 10 billion kilowatt hours, 180000 tons of standard coal can be saved each year, equivalent to the full load capacity of 100 freight trains.

The project is equipped with a complete set of ultra-low emission flue gas purification facilities. The factory area implements zoning collection and graded recycling of rainwater and production wastewater, achieving zero discharge of industrial wastewater, fully matching the ecological protection requirements of the Yangtze River Basin in the Three Gorges Reservoir area, and strictly fulfilling the ecological and environmental protection responsibilities of the Yangtze River Economic Belt.

The largest thermal power plant in Southwest China has taken shape

After the project is completed and put into operation, the total installed capacity of Wanzhou Power Plant will exceed 4.1 million kilowatts, with an annual power generation of up to 20 billion kilowatt hours, officially ranking among the largest thermal power plants in the southwest region. As the core supporting power source of Chongqing power grid, this project will significantly enhance the regional power grid's peak shaving and supply capacity, inject strong foundational energy into the stable supply of electricity for local industries and the sustained growth of regional economy in Chongqing, and achieve a two-way balance between efficient coal-fired power and ecological protection while ensuring power safety and stability.Editor/Cheng Liting
