On September 8, 2026, the Tanzanian Ministry of Water Resources officially awarded the Falkwa Dam and supporting road construction project to a consortium led by China Jiangxi International Corporation. The project is located in the Falkwa area of the capital city of Dodoma. It will construct a concrete roller compacted gravity dam with a main dam height of 32 meters and a dam length of 1185 meters, as well as a sub dam with a dam height of 15 meters and a dam length of 820 meters. It will also be equipped with 16 kilometers of asphalt roads, spillways, grouting galleries, and other structures. After the completion of this national strategic water conservancy project, it will provide stable water source guarantee for the Dodoma region, supporting the agricultural irrigation and urban water supply needs of the capital.

Dual matching of dam and road

The main body of the project is a concrete roller compacted gravity dam. In addition to the dam project, 16 kilometers of asphalt roads, spillways, grouting galleries and other facilities will also be constructed. In recent years, the Tanzanian government has continued to increase investment in water infrastructure. In early 2026, the Deputy Minister of Agriculture stated during a survey of the Nida Dam and Kassori Dam projects undertaken by Chinese enterprises that the completion of the dams would greatly increase the local agricultural irrigation area and help achieve two seasons of rice planting per year.
