Recently, in the Ekibastuz region of Pavlodar Oblast, Kazakhstan, the energy teams of China and Kazakhstan completed special work talks and finalized the follow-up promotion plan for the 1 GW wind power and energy storage integration project. This new energy project with a total investment of 1.2 billion US dollars is jointly implemented by China State Power Investment Corporation and Pavlodar Green Energy Co., Ltd. It is planned to be put into operation in 2029. From traditional energy trade to integrated wind and storage construction, China Kazakhstan green energy cooperation is writing a new chapter on the Central Asian grasslands.

1 gigawatt of wind power with 600 megawatt hours of energy storage

The project plans to construct a 1 gigawatt large-scale wind farm, which will be accompanied by a 300 megawatt and 600 megawatt hour energy storage system, forming a complete supply system for power generation, storage, and stable electricity. After completion, it is expected that the annual power generation will reach 3.4 billion kilowatt hours, reducing approximately 2 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. The synchronous construction and operation of energy storage devices and wind power projects can effectively stabilize the intermittent fluctuations of wind power, store surplus electricity when wind is sufficient, and smoothly discharge electricity during peak electricity consumption, greatly improving the regulation capacity and operational stability of the power system in northern Kazakhstan, and thoroughly improving the problem of new energy grid connection.

Kazakhstan's new energy scale accelerates

In 2025, renewable energy generation in Kazakhstan will account for 7% of the country's total electricity generation. In the first quarter of 2026, the country's renewable energy generation will reach 2.3 billion kilowatt hours, a year-on-year increase of 15%. According to industry predictions, Kazakhstan's new energy power generation for the whole year of 2026 will exceed 8.8 billion kilowatt hours. In 2026, Kazakhstan plans to add 10 key renewable energy projects, covering 4 wind farms, 5 solar power stations, and 1 hydropower station, with an additional installed capacity of 245 megawatts.
