On the barren slope of the coal mining subsidence area in Zuoyun County, Datong, the first vehicle of energy storage equipment basic building materials has just arrived at the construction site, and the 2.394 billion yuan giant energy storage project has officially started construction. This collapsed ravine left by coal mining decades ago is now becoming the most important green power reservoir in North China. After the project is connected to the grid at the end of the year, the wind and solar power in the Jinbei base will no longer have to rely on the weather. Stable clean power will be directly transmitted to the Beijing Tianjin Hebei region thousands of miles away through the ultra-high voltage channel.

As of mid September 2026, 87% of the site leveling for the three sections of the project has been completed, and the customized production task for the first batch of energy storage cells has started scheduling in top domestic factories.

Combining two technologies to solve industry pain points

The core technological highlight of the project lies in Yungang North Station, where an innovative combination of 80 MW lithium iron phosphate and 20 MW full vanadium liquid flow hybrid energy storage solution is one of the few domestically implemented large-scale projects at the provincial level.

When there is a sudden fluctuation in wind and solar power output, lithium iron phosphate can respond in milliseconds and instantly fill the gap in the power grid; In the event of consecutive days of cloudy and windless weather, all vanadium flow energy storage can stably release electricity for several hours, completely solving the industry's shortcomings of single energy storage technology, such as fast peak shaving or long battery life. From the release of the bidding announcement at the end of July to the completion of the bidding announcement for all sections on September 4th, the entire preliminary process only took 37 days, and the construction speed far exceeded the average level of energy storage projects of the same scale.

A complete new energy system will emerge in the subsidence area

This energy storage project does not exist in isolation. It, together with the 5GW photovoltaic and 1GW wind power already under construction at the Jinbei base, and the 2GW supporting coal-fired power in the commissioning stage, forms a complete puzzle of wind solar thermal storage integration.

At present, 94% of the photovoltaic pile foundation construction in the Jinbei base has been completed, 35 wind turbines have been hoisted in place, and Unit 1 of the Tongre Phase III coal-fired power plant has completed the power supply for the plant. All sub projects are accelerating synchronously. In the future, over 14.6 billion kilowatt hours of green electricity will be sent to the Beijing Tianjin Hebei region through a 1000 kV high-voltage channel. After the project is put into operation, the utilization rate of new energy in the base will directly exceed 95%, turning this once coal mining subsidence area into a green electricity heart that supports the stability of the North China power system.
