The salt cavern buried thousands of meters underground has made new progress in energy storage, and two units of the Huaneng Jiang Jintan Salt Cavern Compressed Air Energy Storage Phase II Project have completed the entire start-up. As the world's largest project of its kind, the entire set of equipment has been localized and debugged based on existing salt cavern chambers. The performance of various operational indicators has been excellent, laying a solid foundation for the commercialization of large-scale compressed air energy storage.

Progress of Unit Debugging
Huaneng Jiang is responsible for the construction and operation of the second phase project, with a total installed capacity of 700 megawatts and a designed energy storage time of 8 hours. The core equipment has achieved 100% localization. This debugging utilizes underground natural salt caverns and reuses the first phase salt cavern cavity for testing, comprehensively testing the thermal storage and heat exchange of the compressor expander and the collaborative performance of the control system. The key parameters such as vibration, temperature, and pressure of the unit are better than the design indicators, verifying the technical strength of the large capacity salt cavern energy storage system. The project will continue to advance various tests and system integration before grid connection. Keywords: salt cavern compressed air energy storage, Huaneng Jiangsu Jintan

The value and role of the project
After the project is put into operation, it can absorb surplus electricity from new energy sources during low electricity consumption periods, provide stable power supply during peak electricity consumption periods, and have efficient peak shaving and rapid response capabilities. The implementation of the project can improve the level of new energy consumption in the Yangtze River Delta region and enhance the stability of power grid operation. This project overcomes the core problem of large capacity salt cavern energy storage, providing important practical samples for the construction of new power systems and energy security guarantee in China, and promoting the sustainable development of compressed air energy storage track.Editor/Min Jing
