On September 15, 2026, the gates of the upper and lower reservoirs of the Langjiang Pumped Storage Power Station in Zhaoqing slowly fell, and the reservoir water began to rise in an orderly manner along the dam body. The first variable speed pumped storage project in the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area has officially entered the sprint period of water storage and production from the construction stage.

Core equipment achieves domestic independence
This power station with a total installed capacity of 1.2 million kilowatts is a key implementation project of the 14th Five Year Plan in China, with a total investment of 8.67 billion yuan and the installation of four 300000 kilowatt units, including the first 300 megawatt variable speed unit in China.
The project adopts a completely independently developed AC excitation system, breaking the long-term technological monopoly of foreign countries. The annual designed power generation is 1.35 billion kilowatt hours, which can save 360000 tons of standard coal and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 900000 tons per year. The supporting 500 kV transmission line was officially put into operation in August this year, connecting the last mile of the subsequent units to the grid.
Significantly improved peak shaving capability
The use of variable speed units will increase the load response speed of the power station by 30% compared to conventional pumped storage, and enable the switching from full load pumping to full load power generation within 20 seconds, greatly enhancing the regulatory ability of Guangdong power grid to cope with wind and photovoltaic fluctuations.
