Deep in the South China Sea, the waves crash against the shore. On the azure sea 70 kilometers offshore, giant wind turbines stand tall in the wind, turning endless sea breeze into clean electricity. This ± 500 kV flexible DC power highway crosses waves and reaches the Greater Bay Area, making the surging wind energy of the deep sea the green pulse driving the development of the bay area.

The first batch of units connected to the grid
On September 27, 2026, the first batch of units in the fifth and seventh phases of the Three Gorges Yangjiang Qingzhou offshore wind power project were successfully connected to the grid for power generation, marking important progress in the large-scale development of China's far-reaching offshore wind power. As the world's highest voltage level and largest transmission capacity offshore wind power flexible DC transmission project, this project will provide stable clean energy for the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area.

Breakthrough in long-distance power transmission
The project is located in the southern sea area of Yangxi County, Yangjiang City, Guangdong Province, with a total installed capacity of 2 million kilowatts. The site center is about 70 kilometers offshore and the water depth exceeds 50 meters. In response to the challenge of long-distance power transmission, the project adopts a flexible DC transmission scheme of ± 500 kV/2 million kW. The wind turbine power is collected through a power collection submarine cable and flows into the Sea Breeze Heart offshore converter station, and then sent to the onshore control center through a DC submarine cable, creating multiple world firsts.
Improvement of domestication rate
The project has significantly increased the localization rate of core equipment such as basic steel structures, wind turbine units, submarine cables, and electrical equipment, promoting the enhancement of China's independent research and manufacturing capabilities for offshore wind power equipment. The project team overcame challenges such as strong winds and waves, severe salt spray corrosion, and frequent typhoons to efficiently complete unit commissioning, submarine cable laying, system commissioning, and grid connection testing. After full operation, it can deliver approximately 6 billion kilowatt hours of clean electricity to the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area annually, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 5 million tons.Editor/Gong Ziwei
