The benchmark commuter railway in Gauteng Province, South Africa, the Gauteng train, is about to undergo a systematic renovation. Alstom, as a strategic industrial partner of the SSM consortium, has won a 15 year renovation contract worth 800 million euros. The project will add new trains, upgrade signal systems, and synchronously renovate the fleet, continuously safeguarding the core commuting routes in Africa.

The project covers the construction of new buildings
The Gauteng train route is approximately 80 kilometers long, connecting Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Oliver Tambo International Airport, and is a benchmark fast commuter railway in Africa. Alstom will build 8 new four car high-speed trains, which will be locally produced at the Nigel Ubenye factory in Gauteng province. At the same time, the existing 24 trains will be renovated, and the fleet size will be expanded to 32 trains. The project will be equipped with new signals, communication updates for the entire line, and EPC engineering. Keywords: Gauteng trains, Alstom

The project period is fifteen years from September 28, 2026 to 2041. Alstom will also provide long-term maintenance, spare parts, and technical support. After the upgrade, the line capacity, frequency, and operating hours will be optimized, and the station security passenger information system will be improved to promote the integration of public transportation and rail transit. The project will cultivate local skills, expand the South African railway supply chain, and consolidate Alstom's position in the African rail transit market.Editor/Min Jing
