On October 21, 2026, Enel Colombia, a subsidiary of the Italian Enel Group, officially announced that the Atl á ntico photovoltaic power station located in the Atlantic Province of Colombia has entered full commercial operation. The 985MWp photovoltaic complex, consisting of three adjacent power stations, has been fully implemented, directly breaking the record for the largest centralized photovoltaic capacity in Colombia.

The large-scale photovoltaic cluster has officially taken shape

This largest photovoltaic complex in the country is composed of three power stations, Guayepo I&II, Guayepo III, and Atl á ntico, which are put into operation in stages. The total installed capacity on the DC side is 985MWp, corresponding to approximately 755MW of installed capacity on the AC side, covering the entire residential electricity demand of Colombia's second largest city, Medellin. Among them, Guayepo I&II has an installed capacity of 462.4MWp, which is currently the largest photovoltaic project in Colombia in terms of single unit capacity. Recently, the net effective capacity has increased by 5MW. Guayepo III has an installed capacity of 266MWp, which has been increased by 20MW after operation. The latest Atl á ntico power station, which has been put into operation, has an installed capacity of 256MWp and is currently operating at 180MW. After completion of subsequent testing, it will be increased to 199MW.

The Atl á ntico power station has installed over 400000 solar panels, distributed in 34 sub fields, all of which use tracking systems to improve solar radiation utilization and power generation efficiency. The power station covers an area of approximately 415 hectares and is connected to the Sabanararga substation via a 3.5-kilometer transmission line. As early as March 2026, it began supplying power to the Colombian national interconnection system and completed the full process commissioning for the final commercial operation. After the entire photovoltaic complex is fully put into operation, the annual power generation is expected to be about 1300 GWh, of which the Atl á ntico power station alone has an annual power generation of 525 GWh, which can meet the daily electricity needs of more than 730000 people.

Multi party collaboration model implemented for energy transformation

The project is led by Enel Colombia and developed and executed through Enel Green Power. The investment in the Atl á ntico power station alone is about 200 million US dollars. Enel's total investment in the Guayepo III and Atl á ntico projects is about 1.7 trillion Colombian pesos, equivalent to over 400 million US dollars. The European Investment Bank has provided a total of 200 million US dollars in debt financing for two projects, with the first 100 million US dollars disbursed in July 2025. China Power Construction, as the main EPC general contractor for the Guayepo III and Atl á ntico projects, is responsible for the core construction tasks. The BOP project is divided into multiple international contractors for regional promotion, and core equipment such as transformers are jointly supplied by three companies, Chint Siyuan Electric WEG. Through division of labor and cooperation, project risks are dispersed and construction schedules are optimized. Keywords: new energy projects, photovoltaics

During the project construction period, the Atl á ntico power station alone created over 2500 job opportunities, with over 75% of them coming from local residents in the Atlantic Province. Enel also collaborated with the Colombian National Training Service to provide skills training and retain long-term new energy operation and maintenance talents for the local area. With the full operation of this super photovoltaic cluster, Enel Colombia has operated six utility scale solar power plants in Colombia, with a total installed capacity of more than 1404MWp, accounting for about 50% of the national centralized dispatching solar energy capacity. Colombia's energy transformation process also ushered in a new landmark.Editor/Cheng Liting
