Under the blue waves of the Persian Gulf in the Middle East, the world's top gas fields are brewing a silent upgrade that concerns the lifeline of energy. When offshore compression facilities become the key puzzle for stable production, a cross Eurasian competition for marine engineering general contracting has quietly begun.

The Middle East ocean energy market welcomes heavyweight projects. Qatar Energy LNG Company has initiated the pre qualification of the COMP6 engineering package contractor for the Northern Gas Field NFPS project, which adopts the EPCI model and has a potential contract value of up to 4 billion US dollars. French Technip Energies has won the FEED front-end design contract for the project, and the project has officially entered the stage of selecting the general contractor.

4 billion project opens preliminary review

The Northern Gas Field is located in the northeastern waters of Qatar and is one of the world's top non associated gas fields, supporting the development of the country's LNG industry. COMP6 is an offshore compression facility project, which is not a new gas field development, but an upgrade of offshore facilities to maintain stable gas field production. Long term exploitation of gas fields may lead to a decrease in reservoir pressure, and offshore compression platforms can increase gas transmission pressure to ensure gas supply. The technical threshold for this project is high, and details such as platform configuration and construction period have not yet been made public.

The general contracting market is about to compete

The FEED phase will determine the technical solution and investment estimate, laying the foundation for EPCI bidding. Owners will select enterprises with experience in large-scale offshore construction, and candidates need to consider comprehensive capabilities such as manufacturing, procurement, and offshore construction. Pre qualification does not mean awarding the contract, holding the FEED contract does not mean winning the subsequent general contracting, and the bidding and winning results are still to be announced. Chinese enterprises welcome new opportunities

Qatar continues to expand its LNG production capacity, driving supply chain demand for compression modules, steel structures, electrical equipment, and more. Based on the experience of COMP5 project, Chinese offshore engineering enterprises have already established a foundation for participating in large-scale overseas projects. The shortlist of COMP6 and the participation of Chinese manufacturing resources are worthy of continuous tracking by the industry. The Northern Gas Field Engineering Package will also promote global offshore competition and supply chain cooperation in the future.Editor/Gong Ziwei
