To implement the important common understandings reached by the leaders of the two countries and advance exchanges and cooperation in the energy sector, Wang Hongzhi, Administrator of the National Energy Administration of the People’s Republic of China, and Tim Hodgson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Canada, co-chaired the first China-Canada Ministerial Dialogue on Energy via videoconference on November 4, Beijing time (November 3, Ottawa time).

Both sides reaffirmed that strengthening China-Canada energy cooperation would contribute to ensuring energy security in both countries, advancing the energy transition, and promoting sustainable economic development. While both countries acknowledge the progress made over this past year, they also recognize that there is more to do to advance the Strategic Partnership and strengthen our bilateral cooperation on energy. Both sides expressed their readiness to enhance policy dialogue and information exchanges on the basis of equality, mutual benefit and mutual respect, and to encourage practical cooperation between energy enterprises of the two countries to achieve that end.

Based on the discussions, both sides agreed to further strengthen exchanges and cooperation in areas including both conventional and renewable energy, civil nuclear energy, and uranium resources. They encouraged their energy enterprises to strengthen communication and engagement, leverage their respective strengths, and actively explore opportunities for energy trade, technology exchange, investment, and project cooperation for mutual benefit.

China appreciated Canada’s active support for energy cooperation during China’s APEC Year in 2026. Both sides agreed to continue strengthening communication and coordination on energy issues in multilateral frameworks and to contribute positively to global energy security and the energy transition.

Select energy enterprises from both countries, along with Canadian provinces and territories, participated in the Dialogue.Editor/Min Jing
