On the sand dunes of Alxa, photovoltaic panels are spread out according to the slope, and dozens of wind turbines are scattered on the top of the sand mountain, turning as soon as the wind comes. But in the past few years, the electricity generated by these scenic spots often couldn't be delivered. In the autumn of 2026, a new route will connect them to the eastern sea of Wuhai.

The fan stands on the top of the sand mountain

On November 5, 2026, Alxa Power, the first regional mutual aid project in Inner Mongolia, was connected to the 220 kV grid for the 2 million kilowatt new energy project in Wuhai City. The power transmission started on October 31. The 2 million kilowatt wind, solar, and storage integrated new energy station now has the conditions for grid connected power generation, and electricity will be directly transmitted to Wuhai City along this cross city transmission channel.

The total installed capacity of the project is 2 million kilowatts, including 300000 kilowatts of wind power and 1.7 million kilowatts of photovoltaic power. Three booster stations and a 300000 kilowatt/600000 kilowatt hour grid type energy storage system will be built as supporting facilities. The estimated annual power generation after commissioning is 4 billion kilowatt hours. The grid connection project consists of three 220 kV transmission lines with a total length of 40.4 kilometers, closely connecting the Haribulun No.1, No.2, and No.3 booster stations with the Arishan 500 kV substation, bringing together resource rich areas and load centers.

The scenery finally has a way out

This project is the first desert hinterland wind power project in China, and the construction is not easy. The bearing capacity of the foundation brought by pure sand is a hard hurdle, and the construction party has found a way to make the wind turbine firmly stand on the sand mountain, which not only maintains the safety bottom line but also maximizes the use of wind resources.

Zhang Yang, the project manager of Inner Mongolia Power Group Alxa Power Supply Company, said that this is a key and fundamental project for the cross-border green power transmission in the local area, which has completely opened up an important channel for the transmission of new energy in Alxa.
