In early January 2027, Masdar and Endesa officially launched on-site construction of three battery energy storage projects in the Extremadura and Andalusia regions of Spain. This is also the first energy storage development project to be implemented since the two companies established a strategic cooperation in 2024.
All three energy storage projects are anchored to upgrade existing photovoltaic power plants
The total installed capacity of the three projects is 60.16MW/120.34MWh, with a total investment of 25.2 million euros, and it is expected to be fully put into commercial operation by the end of 2027. The Ardila project in Badajoz Province has the largest scale, reaching 36.10MW/72.20MWh, supporting a local 44MWp photovoltaic power station, with 12 battery containers on site, and a total investment of 14.3 million euros, of which 4.6 million euros comes from public funding from the Spanish government.

The La Vega I and La Vega II projects, located in Teba, Malaga Province, have a single station capacity of 12.03MW/24.07MWh each, totaling 24.06MW/48.14MWh. Each station is equipped with 4 battery containers, and the total investment for the two projects is 10.9 million euros, of which 4.4 million euros is government public funding. All projects rely on existing photovoltaic power stations for hybrid upgrades, without the need for additional large-scale land acquisition. They directly connect to the grid through existing grid channels, greatly reducing the construction period and initial investment of the projects.
Network building technology faces the challenge of high proportion new energy grid
All projects adopt lithium iron phosphate batteries in conjunction with grid type inverters, which can output synthetic inertia externally, simulate the stability characteristics of traditional synchronous units in the power grid, respond quickly to power grid disturbances in milliseconds, and solve the problem of power grid frequency and voltage fluctuations caused by the high proportion of renewable energy integration in Spain. During the project implementation process, we promise to prioritize the use of European origin equipment. At the same time, we will collaborate with the CIRCE Research Center and the Comillas Pontifical University Technical Research Institute to conduct on-site testing and long-term operational data research on grid type operation, accumulating practical experience for the grid access standards of similar photovoltaic and energy storage projects in Spain in the future. Previously, Masdar acquired a portion of Endesa's photovoltaic asset equity through acquisition in 2024. The two parties have simultaneously launched three energy storage projects, marking the official entry of cooperation from the asset acquisition stage to the substantive landing stage of joint development.Editor/Cheng Liting
