On November 3, 2026, at the Zimbabwe Zambia Energy Project Summit held in Livingstone, Zambia, Modaso Energy, a subsidiary of Swiss MISA Group, and local Zimbabwean developer Tatanga Energy officially announced their joint efforts to promote the Guruve Mazowe integrated wind, solar and energy storage project, with a total investment of approximately $300 million.

Efficient transmission of 228MW wind and solar energy storage through a single grid connection

The project site is located in Mashonaland Province, Zimbabwe, and upon completion, it will become Zimbabwe's first utility scale wind farm. The total installed capacity of the project includes 128MW wind power, 100MW AC side photovoltaic, and 50MW/100MWh battery energy storage, but only shares one 100MW grid connected transmission point, greatly reducing the investment cost of the transmission line.

Photovoltaics mainly concentrate on daytime output, while wind power can supplement power supply during the morning and evening periods when photovoltaic output is low. When the total output of wind and solar exceeds the upper limit of 100MW, energy storage will store the surplus electricity and release it when there is surplus at the grid connection point. This scheduling mode can transfer surplus electricity that could only be idle to other periods, greatly improving the utilization efficiency of individual grid connection points. The project is planned to connect to the nearby 132kV Mutorashanga Horseshoe transmission line. The construction of the substation, coordination of the connection interval, and the joint control system of wind, solar, and energy storage will be the core links in the subsequent project promotion. According to the developer's calculation, the annual power generation of the project can reach 550GWh.

Multi channel electricity purchase arrangement reduces landing uncertainty

ZESA, Zimbabwe's national power company, intends to serve as the main purchaser of electricity. Currently, the power purchase agreement and grid usage agreement are still in the negotiation stage. ZimGreenCo, a subsidiary of Africa GreenCo, has signed the main terms and conditions for purchasing electricity, intending to purchase a portion of the project's electricity in the long term. This arrangement has added a stable sales channel for the project and opened up a channel for regional electricity trading through the Southern Africa Power Pool in the future. At the financing level, Standard Bank has been appointed to lead the arrangement of debt financing, and the relevant main terms have been agreed upon. The project is currently in the development and financing arrangement stage, with the goal of completing financing delivery by mid-2027 and achieving commercial operation by 2029. The signing of the formal power purchase agreement, finalization of network connection details, and implementation of financing delivery will be the three core nodes to determine whether the project can proceed as planned.Editor/Cheng Liting
