China started late in the construction of pumped storage power stations, but a higher starting point has won development opportunities, especially in recent years, construction technology has led the world. On March 24, 2020, the Fourth Hydropower Bureau and Shangyi Huajing Pumped Storage Power Generation Co., Ltd. formally signed a general contracting agreement for the construction of Hebei Shangyi Pumped Storage Power Station Project.

Shangyi Pumped Storage Power Station with a total investment of 9.565 billion yuan is a national key planning project and the first pumped storage power station in Zhangjiakou City. It was approved by the Development and Reform Commission of Hebei Province on June 27, 2019. The subsidiary Shangyi Huajing Pumped Storage Power Generation Co., Ltd. According to the agreement, the two parties will carry out general contractual cooperation on land acquisition and resettlement for power stations, construction and installation of upper and lower reservoirs and water transmission and power generation systems, and construction of mechanical and electrical equipment.

The power station is located in Xiaojiagou Town, Shangyi County, and is mainly composed of buildings such as the upper reservoir, water delivery system, underground powerhouse, ground switch station and lower reservoir. The upper reservoir of the power station is located in a natural ditch on the right bank of the Dongyang River upstream of the Yongding River, and the lower reservoir is located in the Dongyang River basin. The water transmission and power generation system is located in the mountain between the upper and lower reservoirs. The power station's diversion and tailwater systems are arranged in a single pipe and two machines, and the total length of the waterway line is 5589 meters. Four sets of stand-alone single-stage mixed-flow fixed-speed reversible pump turbines with a single-unit capacity of 350,000 kilowatts were installed, with a total installed capacity of 1.4 million kilowatts, an annual power generation of about 1.54 billion kilowatt hours, and a total construction period of 72 months.

After the power station is completed, it will undertake tasks such as peak regulation, valley filling, frequency modulation, phase modulation, and emergency backup of the power system. It can optimize the power supply structure of the power grid, enhance the rapid response capability of the power grid, ensure the safety of power supply in Beijing, and improve the safety and reliability of the power system And running economy. At the same time, it can also effectively improve the local wind power, photovoltaic and other new energy consumption capacity, promote regional energy conservation and environmental protection, save 119.5 thousand tons of standard coal each year, reduce 280,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions and 50,400 tons of sulfur dioxide emissions. To promote the development of local infrastructure construction and tourism and other related industries, it has significant social benefits for solving local employment and promoting local economic growth and social development.

The pumped storage power station truly realizes the recycling of energy, and the conversion between water and electricity is clean and permanent. After the power station is completed, it can strengthen coordination and cooperation with the State Grid to ensure a continuous supply of energy in the capital.
