On May 7, 2026, the Investment Promotion Commission of Thailand disclosed that six large-scale investment projects were approved, with a total amount of approximately 958 billion Thai baht, equivalent to 202.4 billion yuan. The largest one came from TikTok System Thailand, a subsidiary of ByteDance --842 billion Baht, about 177.8 billion yuan.
Where should the money be invested? Bangkok, Surat Thani, and Nakhon Si Thammasat are simultaneously expanding their server clusters, data storage facilities, and data processing centers. This is not a simple expansion of the content platform, but a key step for ByteDance to land on the cloud and AI infrastructure in Southeast Asia.

More noteworthy is the structure. Among the 6 projects, 3 belong to data center and data hosting services, with a total investment of 913 billion Thai baht, approximately 192.8 billion yuan, accounting for 95% of the total plate. In other words, almost all of what Thailand has approved this round is computing power.
Thailand has become a hub for Byte Southeast Asia
TikTok's investment in Thailand is not a momentary impulse.
In January 2025, Reuters reported that TikTok was approved to invest approximately $3.76 billion in Thailand to build a data hosting project; In February of the same year, it was revealed that approximately 8.8 billion US dollars would be invested in data centers in Thailand over the next five years. In addition to 177.8 billion yuan this time, Thailand alone has committed more than 200 billion yuan in ByteDance cumulative investment.

Meanwhile, competitors have quietly laid out their strategies. Skyline Data Center, backed by UAE capital, invested 46 billion baht in Thailand, while Bridge Data Centers in Singapore landed a 24.6 billion baht project in Chumphon. Microsoft AWS、 Google has previously promoted data center construction in Thailand or surrounding markets. According to Synergy Research data, the Southeast Asian cloud infrastructure market will exceed $18 billion in size by 2025, with an annual growth rate of over 35%, making it one of the fastest-growing regions in the world.
Southeast Asia, the next major battlefield for computing power
Why ByteDance Hitting Thailand?
The answer is hidden in two words: connection. Thailand is located in the geographical center of Southeast Asia, with dense submarine cables, serving as a data hub connecting China, India, and various Southeast Asian countries. The direct fiber optic cable from Bangkok to Shanghai has a latency of less than 50 milliseconds, which perfectly meets the needs of real-time AI inference.
The deeper logic is that TikTok's global monthly active users have exceeded 1.5 billion, and AI recommendation algorithms, short video generation, and real-time translation - each of which is a treasure trove of computing power. Southeast Asia has the fastest user growth rate and the strictest data localization requirements. Building computing power in Thailand is both compliant and efficient. When Microsoft, Google and AWS fought head to head in North America, ByteDance has set its sights on Southeast Asia. This 177.8 billion yuan is not just a data center, but a ticket to the AI era.Editor/Cheng Liting
