Recently, the Chinese President met with the visiting Bangladeshi Prime Minister and jointly announced the creation of a new era China Bangladesh community with a shared future, promoting bilateral relations between the two countries to a higher level. For over a decade, China Power Construction Corporation has rooted itself in the Bangladeshi market, implementing multiple major projects in transportation, energy, and people's livelihoods, and writing a practical chapter for the deep friendship between the two countries.

Building bridges and embankments to protect people's livelihoods

Although the rushing Padma River is known as one of the most dangerous rivers in the world, the Padma Bridge, which opened in June 2022, has stood firmly for nearly three years. This bridge, constructed by PowerChina to support the river regulation project, has overcome multiple world-class challenges and innovatively applied ecological slope protection technology. Nowadays, about 15000 vehicles pass smoothly every day, reducing the detour time of the past seven or eight hours to just over ten minutes, directly benefiting over 80 million people.

On Bashan Island in the Bay of Bengal, PowerChina built a 12.2-kilometer flood control embankment in 2018 and subsequently expanded it, along with supporting drainage systems. This project has completely eradicated waterlogging during the rainy season, allowing tens of thousands of residents to no longer need to move overnight during the monsoon season, becoming a defense line to protect their lives.

The Dasher Gandhi sewage treatment plant located on the outskirts of Dhaka is the largest modern sewage treatment project in South Asia and the first in Bangladesh. The factory processes 500000 tons of sewage per day, covering 5 million citizens, ending the history of direct discharge of local sewage and restoring clear rivers. This is also China's spray drying+rotary kiln incineration process technology and equipment with independent intellectual property rights, which went abroad for the first time and successfully landed overseas. The project has not only solved the livelihood pain that has plagued the local people for several generations, but also created thousands of jobs for the local people during the peak period, which is the green benefit benchmark of the the Belt and Road.

Green Energy Brightens the Country

In the past, local people often joked that the power supply time was very limited, but power outages were the norm, and power shortages have long constrained the development of Bangladesh. The Barisa Power Station, located in southern Bangladesh and adjacent to the Bay of Bengal, is a benchmark energy project independently invested and built by PowerChina. At the end of 2022, the power station was successfully connected to the grid for power generation, becoming a landmark achievement of energy cooperation between the two countries. After the power station is put into operation, PowerChina will simultaneously undertake the operation and maintenance of the supporting dock, continuously ensuring the stable operation of this energy landmark and effectively solving the development obstacles of low fuel transportation efficiency and difficult ship docking in the local area.

In February 2026, the Barisa power station set a new record, delivering over 5 billion kilowatt hours of electricity to the grid since its commissioning. Massive amounts of clean electricity are transmitted from the coast, illuminating the city of Dhaka, driving industrial production in Chittagong, and also illuminating every household in the countryside. The Pabna 64 MW photovoltaic power station, contracted and constructed by PowerChina, is located in the Rajshahi district of northern Bangladesh, covering an area of approximately 195 acres. It is a key project of the second phase of the local 500 MW large-scale new energy cluster.

During the construction phase, the project team will combine the local special geographical environment to implement a complete set of customized solutions, including high pile photovoltaic bases, overhead transmission lines, intelligent centralized inverters, capacitor compensation coordinated regulation, and comprehensive intelligent monitoring, to form a replicable and promotable experience in China's new energy construction and help upgrade the local new energy industry. After the project is put into operation, it can produce an average of 110 million kilowatt hours of clean electricity per year, save 43000 tons of standard coal, reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 110000 tons, effectively alleviate the power gap, and optimize the country's energy supply structure.

Rail Transit Revitalizes New City

Light Rail Line 6 is the first urban rail transit line in Bangladesh designed to improve transportation in the capital and optimize the urban environment. It is nearly 20 kilometers long and has 16 stations. After the opening and operation of this line, it greatly alleviates the congestion situation in Dhaka and is a milestone in the development of Bangladeshi cities, with epoch-making significance. Dhaka has one of the highest population densities in the world, with inadequate infrastructure and prominent urban congestion issues. The landing of light rail not only facilitates daily travel for the public, but also significantly reduces motor vehicle exhaust pollution and improves the urban ecological environment. Nowadays, the friendly cooperation between China and Bangladesh has entered a new stage of development, and the story of cooperation between PowerChina and Bangladesh is still being continued. A new chapter of rivers and coasts, clean energy, and people's livelihood transportation is slowly spreading on the broad platform of the South Asia Delta and the joint construction of the the Belt and Road.Editor/Gong Ziwei
