Recently, while the global hydrogen energy industry was still feeling cold about the news of consecutive divestments, there was a thunderbolt in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. Chemical giant Auspicious has officially announced the final decision for the Hunter Valley Green Hydrogen Center. At this moment, not only did it end the long debate in the industry about the green hydrogen economy, but it also marked the formal farewell of the hydrogen energy industry to the PPT dream era and plunged into the roaring heavy industry workshop.

Anchoring heavy assets to meet industrial needs

Unlike those demonstration projects that remain on the blueprint, the confidence of the Hunter Valley project lies in its complete abandonment of conceptual hype.

The project relies on Auspicious's century old mature ammonia chemical base, equipped with a 50 MW large-scale electrolytic cell, and utilizes local wind and solar power to produce green hydrogen. The core logic is extremely hardcore, that is, to produce 4700 tons of green hydrogen annually for self use, directly replacing the natural gas raw materials in the synthetic ammonia production line in the factory area, achieving a qualitative change from burning gas to produce ammonia to producing green ammonia from green hydrogen. This approach of embedding green hydrogen into traditional high energy consuming chemical systems replaces 7.5% of fossil energy consumption in enterprises at once, providing a computable and practical real sample for decarbonization of heavy industry.

Policy support drives billions of investment

This milestone reversal cannot be achieved without the strong support of the Australian government from planning to delivery. As the flagship project of the Australian Hydrogen Energy Pilot National Support Program, the project has received a total of AUD 547 million in multi-level subsidy support.

Under the protection of over 70% of the combined funding from the federal and state governments, the company still self raises up to AUD 245 million in real money. As stated by the Australian Minister of Energy, this marks a new stage of real construction and emission reduction in the country's hydrogen energy industry. Against the backdrop of shrinking hydrogen energy budgets in many countries around the world, this combination of production subsidies and scenario binding proves that only by relying on real industrial demand rather than capital speculation can the hydrogen energy industry go further.

Green ammonia becomes the optimal solution for global trade

The deeper strategic significance of the Hunter Valley project lies in verifying the commercial logic of green ammonia as the ultimate carrier of hydrogen energy going global. Faced with the high cost of liquefied storage and transportation of pure hydrogen at minus 253 degrees Celsius, the project chooses to convert green hydrogen on-site into 26600 tons of low-carbon green ammonia. Ammonia can not only liquefy at atmospheric pressure minus 33 degrees Celsius, but also has a mature global trade network and shipping system with a century of history. This not only solves the decarbonization needs of local fertilizer and mining supply chains, but also reserves broad space for exporting green ammonia to the Asia Pacific region in the future. With the start of the countdown to production in 2029, this complete chain of green electricity hydrogen production, green hydrogen ammonia production, and industrial substitution is providing a replicable Chinese solution reference for global heavy industry decarbonization.Editor/Gao Xue
