Recently, the Hami to Chongqing ± 800 kV high-voltage direct current transmission project has been officially put into operation. This power artery, originating from Hami New Energy Base in Xinjiang and located in Chongqing, sends wind and light from the Gobi Desert across thousands of miles to the southwest load center. As China's first ultra-high voltage transmission channel mainly powered by Shagehuang new energy, it has opened up a super channel for green electricity from Xinjiang to the southwest, injecting strong momentum into the green development of the Chengdu Chongqing economic circle.

Green power as the main source, thermal power as the backup

Unlike traditional thermal power transmission channels, the biggest feature of the Xinjiang Electricity to Chongqing Project is the prioritization of new energy and the emphasis on green electricity. The channel power supply mainly relies on the large-scale wind and photovoltaic new energy base in Hami region, combined with a small amount of stable thermal power for bottom regulation. The proportion of clean energy for external power transmission is extremely high, making it a truly green transmission corridor. The project has been positioned as a national level demonstration project for new energy transmission since its planning, specifically serving the large-scale consumption and cross regional configuration of new energy in Shagehuang. The Hami region in Xinjiang is rich in wind and solar resources, with a large surplus of new energy, and has the conditions for large-scale external transmission. This channel has achieved precise docking between the green power production capacity in the west and the electricity demand in the southwest.

Complementary supply and demand to quench the thirst of Southwest China

From the perspective of supply and demand pattern, Chongqing and the southwestern region have intensive industries, concentrated population, and sustained high growth in electricity load. However, the local clean energy development space is limited, and the pressure of reducing emissions from thermal power is enormous, resulting in a long-term gap between electricity supply and demand. The Xinjiang Electricity to Chongqing Project perfectly connects the green electricity production capacity in the western region with the electricity demand in the southwest, achieving cross regional complementarity of resources and greatly alleviating the pressure of power supply guarantee and emission reduction in the Chengdu Chongqing region. For Xinjiang, expanding the consumption and export of new energy has driven the continuous expansion of the new energy industry; For the whole country, promoting the cross regional optimization and allocation of clean energy resources, and assisting in energy conservation, emission reduction, and industrial green upgrading in the southwest region. Ultra high voltage technology ensures stable transmission of green electricity

At the technical level, the project adopts mature and advanced ± 800 kV high-voltage direct current technology, with large transmission capacity, long transmission distance, low line loss, and stable and reliable operation. The intelligent converter station, voltage regulation system, and new energy collaborative dispatch system, which are built as supporting facilities, can accurately adapt to the fluctuation characteristics of new energy, ensure the stable transmission of intermittent green electricity over long distances, and solve the technical problem of difficult long-distance transmission of new energy in the past. The implementation of the Xinjiang Electricity to Chongqing Project has enabled Xinjiang Gobi Green Power to cross thousands of miles and nourish the southwestern land, providing an excellent demonstration model for cross provincial interconnection and green power sharing of the new national power system.Editor/Gao Xue
