Within a week, Eni and Petronas have secured two major contracts for umbilical cables and FPSO, and their Indonesian deep-sea natural gas project is progressing at full speed. The supply chain gears of one of Southeast Asia's largest deep-sea gas fields, a 94.6-kilometer steel pipe umbilical cable and a $2 billion floating production vessel, are beginning to bite.

94.6-kilometer underwater lifeline

The steel pipe umbilical cable contract won by OneSubsea, a subsidiary of SLB, has been described by the industry as one of the largest umbilical cable orders awarded so far. The total length is 94.6 kilometers, the total weight of the system is about 6700 tons, the designed water depth is 2200 meters, and the working pressure is 10000 psi. The manufacturing of a single umbilical cable with a continuous length of 30 kilometers and a weight of about 2100 tons is particularly challenging for production capacity, requiring professional high-capacity turntable facilities to support. OneSubsea will enable parallel manufacturing of both Osgilay and Planetary production lines to shorten delivery cycles. It is worth mentioning that just one month before the contract was announced, Swedish alloy manufacturer Alleima had secured an advanced umbilical cord tube order worth nearly $105 million, which will be used for the project.

$2 billion FPSO spent on Saipem

The FPSO EPCI contract awarded to Italian oil service company Saipem has a total value of approximately 2 billion US dollars and is expected to last for 48 months. It will be jointly executed by Saipem's Indonesian subsidiary and local engineering company PT Tripatra. The FPSO is designed to have a daily processing capacity of over 1 billion standard cubic feet of natural gas, approximately 80000 barrels of condensate, and a storage capacity of 1 million barrels. It is worth noting that the ship's hull has been confirmed to be constructed by China Merchants Heavy Industries. The entire Kutei North Hub development plan covers 16 production wells, underwater production systems, and dedicated pipelines connecting to the Bontang LNG plant. Eni previously confirmed that the final investment decision for the North Hub and South Hub projects was reached in March 2026, and it is expected to be put into operation in 2028.Editor/Cheng Liting
