On August 16, 2026, in a conference room in Egypt's new administrative capital, Electricity and Renewable Energy Minister Mahmoud Esmat sat around a table with representatives from the Ray Energy Group's partner consortium. The latest research report on the South Sinai Integrated Renewable and Clean Energy Project is spread out on the table. This meeting sent a clear signal: the project with a total installed capacity of 3100 megawatts has officially entered the in-depth demonstration period of technical and financial solutions from the conceptual stage.

The project has entered the scheme demonstration period
The South Sinai Integrated Project consists of a solar power station and pumped storage facilities, planned to be implemented in two phases with a total installed capacity of 3100 megawatts. The consortium lineup has been determined, with Lei Energy Group's partner company serving as the main developer, Green Technology Egypt responsible for local technology cooperation, and Oak Holdings undertaking financial and investment cooperation. The scope of the meeting discussion is quite specific, covering core topics such as technical and financial feasibility, proposed technologies, grid access, investment needs, localization ratios, and the capacity that the project can provide to the grid.
The Egyptian power sector has further clarified that the pumped storage project in the Tur region of South Sinai will play a pivotal role in connecting different sources of power generation and energy storage technologies, with the goal of enhancing the stability and continuity of the unified power grid. However, the project has not yet entered the construction phase. In official public information, key information such as total investment amount, capacity of each phase, specific ratio of solar energy and pumped storage, construction period, financing closure, power purchase agreement, land procedures, equipment procurement, and engineering general contractor have not been disclosed. The implementation of these variables will directly determine the release rhythm of equipment and engineering orders.

Energy storage strategy is fully implemented
The South Sinai project is just a piece of the puzzle in Egypt's energy transition map. Egypt's demand for energy storage has risen from the level of individual projects to the level of the entire power system. On August 12th, the progress of the new energy strategy announced by the Egyptian Presidential Office showed that Egypt proposed to increase the proportion of clean energy generation to 45% by 2028, and battery storage and local manufacturing were listed as key directions to ensure grid stability and expand new energy access.
In the project portfolio announced in May, a total of 4000 megawatts of grid connected and independent energy storage facilities in Minya, Alexandria, and Kina have been included in the plan. With the addition of 3100 megawatts in South Sinai, the scale of Egypt's clean energy and energy storage matrix under construction has exceeded 7000 megawatts. This volume means a rapidly opening systemic market for equipment suppliers, engineering contractors, and investors.
Open the Chinese Enterprise Layout Window
For Chinese enterprises, the most valuable task at this stage is not waiting for the bidding announcement, but focusing on several key trigger signals before the project enters procurement from feasibility study: when the capacity and technical route of the two phases will be clarified, how to divide the electromechanical system and civil engineering boundary of the pumped storage station, who will invest and construct the power grid access plan, and when the project financing and power purchase arrangements will be finalized.

The equipment side can focus on tracking photovoltaic modules, inverters, transformers, switchgear, transmission and transformation systems, as well as pumped storage electromechanical equipment. Egypt has already promoted the local manufacturing project of energy storage batteries with China's Sunshine Power this year, and the Presidential Office reiterated in August the direction of local manufacturing of new energy equipment, especially energy storage batteries. This means that the selection of suppliers for subsequent large-scale projects will place greater emphasis on the manufacturing, assembly, and long-term operation and maintenance capabilities of enterprises within Egypt.keywords:New energy information network
The most practical strategy for Chinese enterprises with local partners, energy storage, and electrical system supply capabilities in Egypt is to first enter the communication range between developers and technical partners, and prepare localization plans and equipment technical information in advance. The project is closer to development and design opportunities in the short term, and construction and large-scale equipment procurement still need to wait for further clarification on financing, grid connection, and procurement arrangements. But once the window period opens, well prepared companies will be the first to receive admission tickets.Editor/Yang Meiling
