Recently, with the commissioning of the 2 × 660000 kW coal-fired power 750 kV transmission project in Kashgar, southern Xinjiang, the total length of 750 kV transmission lines in Xinjiang has exceeded 15000 kilometers, and the largest provincial-level 750 kV backbone power grid in the country has been built, becoming the province with the most 750 kV substations and the longest lines in the country. From the first ultra-high voltage transmission line being put into operation in 2008 to the formation of the Tarim Ring Network today, this power artery spanning the north and south of the Tianshan Mountains is pushing Xinjiang from an energy region to an energy powerhouse.

Thirteen years and four stages of leapfrog development

The Fenghuang Wubei power transmission and transformation project was put into operation in 2008, marking the beginning of ultra-high voltage construction; In 2010, the first channel connecting Xinjiang and the northwest main grid was completed, and Xinjiang was officially integrated into the national power grid; In 2016, Yili Kuche I was put into operation, forming a basic 750 kV main grid structure; In 2025, the power transmission and transformation project around the Tarim Basin will be put into operation, forming the largest 750 kV ultra-high voltage ring network in China. After more than ten years of continuous construction, Xinjiang has built 39 750 kV substations and 120 transmission lines, with a power grid spanning 3300 kilometers from north to south and 2200 kilometers from east to west.

Cracking the Time Space Contradiction of Northern Wealth and Southern Shortage

The energy resources and electricity load in Xinjiang are distributed in a reverse direction, with the north being rich and the south lacking, and the east being more and the west being less. The single circuit transmission capacity of a 750 kV line is 5 to 10 times higher than that of a 220 kV line, and the transmission distance is 3 to 5 times longer, effectively supporting long-distance high-capacity power transmission. Relying on a strong grid structure, thermal power in northern Xinjiang, wind and solar power in eastern Xinjiang, and photovoltaic power in southern Xinjiang have achieved comprehensive mutual assistance. The transmission capacity of the transmission section in northern and southern Xinjiang has been greatly improved, and the transmission section in eastern Xinjiang has entered the tens of millions of kilowatts level. The power grid has formed an internal supply eight ring network and an external transmission five channel main network frame pattern. The internal eight ring network is closely interconnected, and the external three ultra-high voltage direct current and two AC channels continue to be transmitted. Green power transmission and future layout

As of the end of July 2026, Xinjiang's cumulative external power transmission exceeded 1.1 trillion kilowatt hours, with new energy transmission accounting for nearly 30% and cross regional transmission capacity reaching 33 million kilowatts. In 2026, State Grid Xinjiang Electric Power will coordinate the promotion of 38 ultra-high voltage and extra high voltage projects, with plans to start 11 new projects, build 1917 kilometers of 750 kV lines, and add 25.5 million kVA of substation capacity. It is expected that by 2030, Xinjiang will have built a main transmission network with three crossings and six straight lines, and the power transmission capacity of Xinjiang will be increased to 60 million kilowatts, continuously contributing green energy to the national energy transformation.Editor/Gao Xue
