When the wave of transformation hits the coast of Southeast Europe, Romania is becoming a hot spot for new energy investment. French energy giant enters the local energy storage track and strengthens its green landscape with grid level long-term energy storage projects. This cross-border layout not only reshapes the regional power pattern, but also reflects the vast opportunities for Chinese equipment companies to borrow ships to go abroad.

The energy transition in Europe continues to advance, and the investment in new energy infrastructure in Southeast Europe continues to rise. Romania, as a core energy market in the region, continues to attract top international energy companies and deeply cultivates the local power and energy storage fields. On September 4, 2026, the Romanian subsidiary of French energy giant Engie Group announced the acquisition of a local battery energy storage project, demonstrating the strategic layout of multinational energy companies in Eastern Europe and providing important reference for industry investment layout.
Details of Energy Storage Project Implementation
The large-scale grid level energy storage project acquired by Engie Romania is located in Kalan Town, Hunedoara County, central western Romania. It is situated in the traditional industrial and energy core area, with excellent grid access conditions and solid infrastructure foundation. The installed capacity of this project is 54MW, with a total energy storage capacity of 216MWh. It can achieve 4-hour continuous stable discharge and is a standard long-term independent energy storage facility for the power grid. At present, the project is in the early stage of preparation, and the subsequent work will include land review, equipment bidding, grid connection negotiation, and construction permit processing. It is planned to be officially connected to the grid and put into operation in January 2029.

Local business layout of enterprises
Engie has long been deeply involved in the Romanian energy market, with businesses covering natural gas and electricity. Operating a 24400 kilometer natural gas pipeline network, serving over 2.3 million users, with a wind and solar renewable energy installed capacity of 250MW, while providing energy solutions, facility maintenance, and other services. This acquisition of energy storage projects aims to improve the green asset portfolio and enhance the capacity for new energy consumption and grid regulation.

Key points of market investment practice
Three suggestions for overseas investors, EPC and equipment companies: control the grid connection and construction cycle, reserve time buffer, and prevent project delays and capital occupation risks caused by grid lag; Familiar with EU and local policy funds, strictly adhere to compliance standards such as environmental impact assessment and supply chain, and ensure the feasibility of project financing; Promote localization cooperation, adopt equipment+operation and maintenance joint overseas mode, reduce policy risks, and adapt to the local electricity market.
