The Sunnyside Depot in Long Island, New York, is undergoing a major renovation project. Amtrak has invested over $1 billion to build a new maintenance center, providing support for the landing of the new generation Airo trains and continuously upgrading the infrastructure of the Northeast Corridor passenger railway.

The total investment of the project exceeds 1 billion US dollars, and it is planned to be put into use in stages before 2030. Two maintenance tracks and six cleaning service tracks will be newly built in the project, and 11 existing platforms will be renovated to optimize the supporting facilities and line layout of the factory area simultaneously. The facility can serve 83 Siemens manufactured Airo trains and also undertake maintenance for the next generation Acela and long-distance commuter trains.

The funding mainly comes from grants from the Federal Railway Administration. Airo trains will replace old vehicles that have been in service for over 50 years, enhancing the travel experience for passengers. This project is Amtrak's largest maintenance facility project in recent years, which will shorten train downtime and enhance the travel security of millions of passengers on the East Coast.Editor/Min Jing
