In late October 2026, China Energy Engineering Corporation and China Power Engineering International Co., Ltd. officially signed the EPC contract for the 700 MW photovoltaic power generation project in Almaty, Kazakhstan, adding another landmark project to the cross-border new energy cooperation between China and Kazakhstan.
700 MW centralized photovoltaic project landed
The project site is located in Almaty Oblast, Kazakhstan, with flat and open terrain and an annual equivalent utilization hour of over 1500 hours. It has excellent solar energy resource endowment and excellent development conditions for large-scale centralized photovoltaic power plants. The planned installed capacity of the project is 700 megawatts, making it one of the largest single photovoltaic power generation projects in the southern region of Kazakhstan.

The power station plans to use 720 watt N-type high-efficiency double-sided double glass photovoltaic modules, matched with a flat single axis tracking bracket equipped with intelligent reverse tracking function. By dynamically optimizing the layout of the photovoltaic array, the solar energy utilization efficiency is maximized, and the overall power generation efficiency of the power station can be improved by more than 20% compared to traditional fixed bracket power stations. The total investment scale of the project is about 480 million US dollars, and after completion, it will become one of the core green power supply entities in Almaty Oblast.
The layout of green power in Almaty region continues to deepen
The signing of this 700 MW photovoltaic project is not the first layout of China Power Engineering in southern Kazakhstan. In May 2025, China Power Engineering Corporation signed a framework agreement for investment cooperation with the government of Almaty Oblast in Hangzhou for the Batogai 1GW integrated solar energy storage project. The project is located in Essik City, Almaty Oblast, covering a 1GW photovoltaic installation supporting energy storage boosting station and transmission lines, directly serving the subsequent development of Alatau New City. The development is jointly undertaken by a consortium composed of Energy Construction Era New Energy and Xinjiang Institute. Keywords: new energy projects, photovoltaics

After the two large-scale new energy projects are fully put into operation, the newly installed green power capacity in the Almaty region will reach 1.7GW, providing over 2.5 billion kilowatt hours of clean electricity annually, significantly enhancing the local clean energy supply capacity. The project will directly promote the optimization of energy structure in the southern region of Kazakhstan, provide stable project support for the country's renewable energy development and green low-carbon transformation, and also become another practical achievement of China Kazakhstan capacity cooperation in the field of new energy.Editor/Cheng Liting
