When the winds of the plateau sweep over the roof of East Africa, an invisible logistics artery is being reconnected. Beside the Addis Ababa Djibouti Railway, a dry port quietly completed its transformation - it brought the landlocked country Ethiopia closer to the ocean, and also turned the passage into a hub and a connecting story of hub belt development, writing a new footnote in the hinterland of Africa.

Recently, the completion ceremony of the expansion project of the Mojiao Dry Port in Ethiopia, undertaken by China Civil Engineering, was held in Mojiao City, Oromia Region. Ethiopian Prime Minister Abi, Minister of Transport and Logistics Alemu, and Acting Charg é d'affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Ethiopia Sun Mingqing attended the ceremony. Several high-ranking officials from the Ethiopian government, embassy staff, and representatives from China Civil Engineering jointly participated in this event.

Expansion of Dry Port

Mojiao Dry Port is located about 70 kilometers east of the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, adjacent to Mojiao Station on the Addis Ababa Djibouti Railway and the Addis Ababa Adama Expressway. It is a key comprehensive transportation and logistics hub in the area. This project belongs to the Mojiao Dry Port renovation and expansion project of the Yaji Railway, covering an area of approximately 67.8 hectares. After the completion of the project, the annual container throughput capacity of the port increased from 520000 TEUs to 1.6 million TEUs, and the longest detention time for goods was reduced from 60 days to an average of 8 days. The project aims to enhance the efficiency of import and export transportation and customs clearance in Ethiopia, release the capacity of the Addis Ababa Djibouti Railway, and promote local economic and social development.

Project Value

Abi mentioned at the completion ceremony that Ethiopia's economy has steadily grown in recent years, with the logistics industry playing an important supporting role. But as a landlocked country, the country's logistics costs remain high, pushing up the prices of imported goods. The expansion of Mojiao Dry Port will effectively improve throughput and transportation efficiency. Alemu stated that the Mojo Dry Port is the economic artery of Ethiopia and an important cornerstone for solving transportation and logistics problems. He stated that the project is the result of various development actions in Ethiopia, reflecting the country's development vision of relying on integrated infrastructure to drive the economy and promote regional connectivity.

Sun Mingqing stated that this project is an important supporting project for the Addis Ababa Djibouti Railway, which undertakes the transportation of a large amount of foreign trade goods in Ethiopia. Both China and Egypt are jointly promoting the construction of the prosperous zone of the Addis Ababa Djibouti Railway. The modernization and upgrading of the dry port in Mojiao will improve the efficiency of inland logistics and drive economic growth along the railway and in the surrounding areas of Mojiao.
