The transmission lines in Kuala Lumpur's urban area extend smoothly along the city's road network. In October 2026, the National Energy Corporation of Malaysia officially responded to the investment plan for strengthening the power grid in the 2027 budget, with a total investment of RM15 billion for upgrading the national power grid, which was officially included in the TNB's overall investment framework from 2025 to 2027. This accelerated the modernization process of Malaysia's national power infrastructure.

Billion level investment landed in the framework of upgrading the power grid

This RM15 billion investment in strengthening the power grid is a core component of TNB's overall investment plan of RM43 billion from 2025 to 2027. All funds will be directed towards the expansion and modernization of the national power grid, fully matching Malaysia's continuously growing electricity consumption demand. The upgraded power grid will further enhance system stability, laying a solid foundation for the subsequent large-scale integration of new energy, supporting the development of the digital economy and data center industry.

In the first three quarters of 2026, Malaysia's national electricity demand increased by 4.7% year-on-year, with the growth rate of high load industries such as data centers exceeding 21%. The carrying capacity of some old power grid nodes has already reached saturation. After the large-scale investment is implemented, the overall transmission capacity of the national power grid will increase by more than 18%, and the flexible adjustment space for inter regional power mutual assistance will be greatly expanded.

Simultaneous promotion of livelihood and energy transformation goals

TNB has also expressed full support for the measures to expand the coverage of electricity protection in the budget proposal. The policy will raise the coverage threshold of electricity protection from the original 600 kWh per month to 800 kWh per month, and the protection period will continue until December 31, 2027. It is expected to benefit more than 8 million households and cover 90% of domestic electricity users. TNB will also deepen cooperation with the government to accelerate rural electrification projects, with a focus on improving the power supply conditions in indigenous settlements, religious schools, and Islamic schools.

At the level of renewable energy layout, TNB will continue to expand the scale of new energy installed capacity, fully supporting Malaysia's national goal of achieving a 70% share of renewable energy installed capacity by 2050. In the first three quarters of 2026, Malaysia's total newly installed photovoltaic capacity increased by 53% year-on-year. The upgrade of power grid consumption capacity will directly break through the core bottleneck of new energy grid connection and provide a solid network support for the national energy transformation process.
